François RABELAIS – 1483-1553 – is the most famous regional character. You can visit the house where he was born, La Devinière in Seuilly near Chinon – 24 km away from La Dixmeresse. He was a Priest and a Doctor at the same time and he is particularly famous for his novels, which are both satyric chronicles and chivalrous tales with their giant characters – Pantagruel, Gargantua.
He puts popular, dirty and amusing culture forward. This is where the French adjective “Rabelaisien” comes from. It describes a great strapping man who is bon viveur and cheeky.
